Vegan butter is actually very good. If you’ve ever heard of margarine, that’s essentially what vegan butter is—a butter-like spread made from oils instead of dairy.
But not all plant-based butters are the same! Below are my favorite vegan butters.
Earth Balance
This is my everyday vegan butter, and while it doesn’t win when it comes to flavor, it wins in overall value. It comes in a few renditions and there is a soy-free option if that appeals to you. It’s one of the originals so pretty easy to find at an affordable price point. It also lasts quite a while!
Miyokos
This is my winner when it comes to flavor. Miyokos was made with baking in mind so holds up better in that regard, but it’s excellent anywhere you’d use butter.
It is a bit more expensive, so I only use it when it will make direct contact with my tongue. I’ll bake with Earth Balance but I’ll top pancakes or toast with Miyokos for the full experience.
Trader Joe’s Brand
This is a solid affordable option for Trader Joe’s shoppers. It’s not as good as the others but it gets the job done. I’m working to reduce my plastic use so this is also a great alternative to Earth Balance since it comes in aluminum wrapping instead of a plastic tub.
Familiar American Brands
Maybe you or a loved one is dedicated to a particular brand of butter—chances are that brand also makes a vegan alternative.
I only use the three brands listed above so I can’t personally recommend the ones below, but I do like to highlight them as options in case you have an affinity for the companies below.
Country Crock - Dairy-Free Plant Butter
Land O Lakes - Plant-Based Creamy Spread
I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter - It’s Vegan
